This study endeavored to descriptively capture the lived experience of older adults as they obtain their first hearing aid. The phenomenological method was employed to emphasize the personal experiences of the participants. Older adults who had been prescribed and obtained hearing aids were recruited to share their experiences. This study provided a cleared space where their experiences could unfold free from assumptions of previous research. The ontological elements of initial hearing aid use were analyzed. The anxiety produced by choice during the course of treatment, the change in how one engages with the world, and acceptance of new limitations were some of the prominent themes that emerged. The implications are important for audiologists and other helping professionals. A stronger emphasis on non-informational counseling during meetings is needed. The importance of the audiologist's interactions are reinforced as older adults undergo a change in the way that they interact with the world.
