Prior research indicated that using personal navigation device (PND) affects driving performance by forcing drivers to look away from the road. Studies were done based on cross-correlation measures to explore effects of augmented reality (AR) based PND on driving performance. The AR-PND overlays navigation route using a Heads-Up Display (HUD), which in the experiment was done on the simulator screen. AR-PND exhibited less negative impact on driving compared to standard map-based PND (SPND) placed at Head-down display (HDD). However, these are expensive to embed compared to SPNDs and they require manufacture-time inclusion in the vehicle. We seek to investigate alternative AR based PND placed at HDD, namely Camera View PND (CVPND). Using SPND as baseline, we invited participants to try SPND, AR-PND and CVPND using a high-fidelity driving simulator and explore the effect of these PNDs on their driving performance in a city traffic environment, where constant vigilance is required.
