The aim of this work is to analyze and explore both the meaning and purpose of Matthew's quotation of Hosea 11:1, in Matthew 2:15. Ultimately, this thesis will prove that in quoting Hosea 11:1 as fulfilled in the life of Jesus, Matthew placed himself within a theological and interpretive stream of thought already present in the Old Testament. This Old Testament trajectory of thought established a clear solidarity between the nation of Israel and her Messiah, even to the extent that the former was viewed as a typological foreshadowing of the latter. However, in keeping with his Christological intentions, Matthew cited Hosea 11:1 as fulfilled in the life of Jesus, precisely because this verse was part of a larger indictment by God against Israel for its unfaithfulness. In this way, Matthew was able to present Jesus as the perfect personification of Israel; the one who relives the history and champions the cause of the nation, yet as God's unique Son, succeeds in fulfilling the purposes of God where the corporate nation had repeatedly failed.
