Most of the research done in the realm of residential treatment has been limited to specific disorders, different types of treatment facilities, and to adult clientele. Youth make up a surprising number of clients in residential treatment facilities, and yet are not a primary focus in the research. It has been known for centuries that relationships with primary caregivers are essential for positive developmental, social, and emotional outcomes for children. Children in residential treatment facilities also have the same need to be nurtured, cared for, and supported. It is imperative that the youth, who are living in these facilities with little to no contact from biological parents, are cared for by others, namely milieu staff. There is much to be learned from milieu staff, and how they take on a parentified role in the lives of the youth in residential treatment facilities.
