Suicide in prisons is reaching worldwide crisis proportions representing the leading cause of unnatural death in jails from 2000-2007. Among opiate users, suicide ranks as one of the top four causes of death. Yet, relatively few studies have demonstrated a specific relationship between opiate dependence and suicide attempt among jail inmates. Prior research indicated that most jail suicides involved young, Caucasian males who were intoxicated at time of incarceration and attempted or completed suicide within 24 to 48 hours after arrest. This study, using an ex post facto design, involved a purposive sample of medical records of jailed male inmates housed at a county adult detention complex (County ADC) in a western state from 2007-2010. The dependent variable was opiate dependence and the independent variable was suicide attempt lethality to determine the nature of the relationship between opiate dependence and suicide attempt. A statistically significant positive relationship was found between opiate ependence and suicide attempt lethality.
