520 $a Continuous use of AGPs has led to antibiotic resistant bacteria that threaten animal and human health. Minerals are used concurrently with AGPs in the industry for their growth promotion properties. In broilers, copper is commonly supplemented in poultry diets in excess of maintenance requirements for its antimicrobial tendencies. High levels of zinc in the form of zinc oxide (ZnO) is used in swine diets but is uncommonly used in the broiler industry. Zinc has been shown to have bactericidal properties, and may inhibit bacterial overgrowth in the gut.
520 $a The effects of supplemental minerals on broiler health were examined in five experiments. Experiments 1 and 2 examined the efficacy of supplementing copper in the form of tribasic copper chloride (TBCC) to mineral-deficient and mineral-sufficient birds during a subclinical coccidiosis infection. Data from these experiments showed that broilers respond differently to supplemental copper under mineral sufficient and mineral deficient conditions during a subclinical coccidiosis challenge. In a mineral deficient situation, TBCCC supplementation can negatively affect broiler performance but does not impact performance under mineral-sufficient conditions.
520 $a Experiments 3 and 4 examined the effects of various doses of zinc from zinc oxide on broiler health and growth during a subclinical coccidiosis infection. Experiment 3 sought to determine appropriate levels of ZnO to supplement in broiler diets, and experiment 4 aimed to determine whether supplemental zinc was beneficial to broiler performance. These experiments demonstrated that zinc may improve broiler health in the presence of a subclinical coccidiosis infection but is not sufficient to significantly improve broiler growth during a more severe infection.
520 $a The final experiment sought to directly compare the efficacy of ZnO to bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD), an AGP commonly used in the broiler industry. A subclinical coccidiosis infection was used to replicate industry conditions of a low, constant, inflammatory challenge. Effects showed a strong improvement in performance of ZnO supplemented birds compared to BMD supplemented birds and controls. This suggests that ZnO and BMD supplementation beneficially modified intestinal morphology and could have supplied protective effects that maintained bird performance despite the subclinical coccidiosis infection. Zinc oxide supplementation warrants further research as a potential tool used in the broiler industry to improve broiler performance.
