The magnitudes of localized rain rate maxima (RM) and the extreme rainfall of the RM in intense (categories 3 -- 5) tropical cyclones' (TCs') inner region are investigated by using the version 6 of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) dataset during 1998 -- 2010. The RM modes range between 4.5 -- 8.5 mm h-1. The empirical distribution functions increase with TC category. However, there is no clear dominance for either the eyewall or the inner rainband within each category. The descending order of RM≥25 mm h-1 probability (P25) for the six major ocean basins is as follows: North Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Northwest Pacific, South Pacific, South Indian Ocean, and east-central Pacific. The six major basins are further divided into twenty-nine sub-basins to discern regional variability of extreme RM. Sub-basins with high P25 include the Bay of Bengal, the South Philippine Sea, the East China Sea, the north coast of Australia, southeast Melanesia, and northwest Atlantic. Sub-basins with a higher proportion of CAT5 observations than CAT3 observations tend to have a higher P25 beyond 60 km from the storm center than within the 60-km radius.
