In order to understand why and how Chinese and Americans behave and interact in their certain ways that differ from one to another, this dissertation studies the value differences and similarities between the two countries. This study firstly clarifies the theoretical confusions in using the terms identity, self, value, and culture. Value is defined in this study as a mediating variable between sources influencing behavior and behavior itself, for interpreting sources and directing behavior. Value, at the individual level, is a cognitive code that is equivalent to identity or self; at the collective level, value is a foundation of socially ordered life that has been mostly called culture.

Factor analysis and correlation analysis methods are employed by this study to analyze the Chinese and American data sets that are in a major international data set---the 1990--93 World Values Survey. Two sets of 11 extracted factors from both PRC and USA data are interpreted under their cultural contexts. The correlation analysis of the two sets of factors shows that there are 9 out of 11 factors that are highly correlated between the two sets of 11-factors. These common dimensions are: Self-expression in a job, self-determination in helping behavior, cultural homogeneity in marriage, trusting authoritative institutions, concerning behavior influencing public interest, concerning spiritual needs and subjective well-being, and seeking material and religious comfort. The Chinese unique dimensions are a sense of moral righteousness and identification with large communities. The American unique dimension is about the public roles of church.

Using the author's sociological imagination to do an inductive extrapolation beyond the data at hand, this study also found that those common dimensions are still in great contrast. The Chinese core values (in terms of directing permanent and constant behavior) are influenced by a continuity of socially-oriented morality and interdependency on one hand, and by seeking an individualistic satisfaction and hedonism on the other hand. The Chinese contradictory core values are explained by the impact of modernization started from the 1980s on the traditional continuity of the pan-moralized and pan-politicized culture. The American core values are shown as seeking independent self-expression and self-satisfaction on the basis of religious and civic consciousness.
