Yi Yin, the Founding Minister of the Shang dynasty, served as a model of the virtuous man of obscure origins who assisted a sage king, T'ang the Victorious, in overthrowing Chieh, the evil last ruler of the Hsia, and establishing the Shang Dynasty. He served his lord as advisor, strategist, spy, ritualist and minister, and was rewarded with the position of Prime Minister. He continued to serve T'ang's sons and grandsons as advisor, minister and regent. Upon his death he was included in the cycle of sacrifices reserved for the ancestors of the royal house of Shang.

In this study I have attempted to establish the historicity of Yi Yin through an examination of the oracle inscriptions of the Shang, and early historical texts. A brief introduction to the Shang is provided in Chapter II; a study of Yi Yin in the oracle inscriptions found in the Shang ruins at Anyang is undertaken in Chapter III; and in Chapter IV, the early historical texts are examined. It is possible to ascertain that Yi Yin was indeed an historical figure of great importance in the Shang.

In the subsequent chapters I have examined the legendary persona of Yi Yin which flourished in the late Chou dynasty literary texts. The narrative of his miraculous birth in the Hollow Mulberry tree, and related myths are explored in Chapter V. In Chapter VI the prevalent motif of Yi Yin carrying the tripods is examined. Yi Yin served as a cook in order to approach T'ang; he functioned as a shaman and physician, and was an unseen presence during the legendary sacrifice of T'ang. A translation of the Pen-wei "Basic Flavors" rhapsody from the Lu-shih ch'un-ch'iu is provided to illustrate Yi Yin's service as culinary expert and wise advisor. In Chapter VI, Yi Yin's position as Three Dukes is examined. The newly discovered text of The Nine Rulers from the Han tombs at Ma-wang-tui is used to illustrate Yi Yin functioning in the capacity of the Three Dukes. A translation of that text is also provided.
