The purpose of this study was to determine and compare sources of jot satisfaction and dissatisfaction of full-time faculty in public and private universities in Taiwan. The study analyzed and explored solutions that may enhance satisfers and eliminate dissatisfiers.

The population for the study included all full-time faculty in universities in Taiwan. The survey was mailed to 360 full-time faculty at six public universities and six private universities in Taiwan. A total of 268 usable surveys were returned for an overall response rate of 74.4 percent.

The survey instrument used to collect data for the study contained sixty items divided into two parts. Part 1 of the survey requested demographic information including age, gender, type of institution, professional standing, academic rank, years of university experience, and current salary. Part 2 consisted of fifty-three items on a five-point Likert-type scale ranging from (1) = very dissatisfied to (5) = very satisfied. The fifty-three items measured job satisfaction and dissatisfaction with various aspects of the work environment.

The largest demographic groupings of the study respondents were in the 36 to 45 year-old range (44.4%), were males (56.7%), had earned master's degrees (57.8%), held the academic rank of instructor (52.6%), had taught for one to five years (39.6%), and had a current salary of NT$60,001 to 80,000 (34.3%).

The results of the study indicated that there is moderate job satisfaction among the full-time faculty in public and private universities in Taiwan. Full time faculty at public and private universities in Taiwan are not dissatisfied with any potential sources of job satisfaction. Faculty from public universities in Taiwan generally experience more job satisfaction than their counterparts at private universities. The greatest source of job satisfaction related to advising and counseling students. Faculty from private universities in Taiwan are more satisfied than public university faculty with the status of teaching as a profession.
