The existing literature on rural China characterizes socioeconomic diversity as a uniquely regional phenomenon: north versus south, coastal versus inland, urban versus rural. I hope to show that within one suburban township of twenty-three contiguous villages, there are also large variations among villages, including wide differences in size, lineage structure, economic activities, and levels of well-being. Furthermore, these village differences are intimately linked to historical variations which are just as striking. The remnants of the old southern Grand Canal, now just little more than a trickle, runs through the township, dividing it virtually in two. In addition to being a geographic division, the river seems to be a major socioeconomic dividing line: most of the villages on the southeast side have higher levels of well being while those on the northwest side are less prosperous.

This dissertation uses enthnographic and survey data to explore village socioeconomic differences in 1994--1995 using local definitions of village and villager well-being as the basic point of comparison. A novel methodological technique makes it possible to move from detailed household survey data to more general village-level indicators available in existing village accountant records. Village-level data are then used to examine the more important historical, social and geographic reasons for why, in 1994, village variations in well-being exist.
