Instructional design processes associated with online courses often do not generating consistent quality in terms of learning outcomes. One area that is critical to instructional design is communication, and persuasion is an important aspect of communication in other fields. Through researching the links shown between persuasion and learning instructional design strategies for eLearning were established based on persuasive technology techniques. Persuasive technology, a sub-discipline of human-computer interaction (HCI), it is not a new form of technology: rather it is utilization of existing technology to persuade changes in the attitude or behavior of its users. Through combining persuasive elements with established pedagogical elements, persuasive instructional strategies were established. This quasi-experimental comparison study compared the results of two courses covering identical content and learning objectives, one built on a custom platform the other redesigned using persuasive instructional strategies base delivered via a Moodle platform. The findings suggests that the use of persuasive instructional strategies implemented via Moodle that were used to present the course to the treatment group made a significant difference in how the learners mastered the learning objectives. The results of this research provides new and useful knowledge to instructional designers looking to implement and research the use of persuasive instructional strategies in the design of online courses and it provides insight to how persuasive instructional strategy can be used when designing online courses.
