Archie Kendall Shipe, the author's great-grandfather, was born in 1897 to a large family in rural Virginia. Blessed with a photographic memory but burdened with a drinking problem, Archie served in the army, endured a botched surgery, briefly played professional baseball, lived through two world wars, argued in front of the Supreme Court, gained moderate fame in Washington, gave testimony in a murder trial, and fell hard due to his drinking.
