The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research was to provide a better understanding of how stress influences the health and quality of life for African American women in leadership in the Detroit Metro area. The study included 15 African American women in leadership positions from various industries. One-on-one personal interviews were conducted to obtain data for the study. The four themes identified included: 1. Negative quality of life when experiencing chronic stress 2. A belief of having to overachieve 3. Some degree of negative health issues/feelings associated with chronic stress and 4. An awareness of the need/use of coping strategies and availability of other stress management resources. Identified themes were validated through the pilot study and peer review. Implications for corporate leadership include finding ways to reduce stress to this employee group through mentor programs or specialized corporate stress management programs to reduce absenteeism and performance issues. Such implications are supported by other literature and studies. Further research is suggested to include a different geographic area, study criteria, and sample size.
