The success of a quality management system (QMS) requires a shared mindset, involving a transformation in human development by managers, individuals, work groups, and the organization as a whole. This transformation requires a change in attitudes to the belief that quality products and services are essential for the wellbeing of the organization and society as a whole.

520 $a This paper presents some underlying challenges with quality in Kenya. In addition, this study evaluates requirements of the quality mindset needed to sustain a QMS and looks at how organizations can build such a model. The paper also studies approaches undertaken by five Kenyan service companies to maintain an ISO 9001-based QMS.
520 $a This study has found that a collective mindset can play a major role in maintaining a QMS. Evidence also suggests that employee satisfaction is a better indicator of the level of customer service than a description of implemented practices.
