The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate the experiences of female jazz instrumentalists who pursue instrumental jazz performance as a college major. Participants included current and recently graduated female undergraduate and graduate jazz majors (N = 40) from across the United States who took a 36-item survey, and a subgroup of the participants who participated in interviews and observations (n = 4). The survey addressed biographical information, attitudes toward being in the jazz field, attitudes toward jazz improvisation, jazz improvisation anxiety, self-efficacy, personality traits, jazz experiences, and mentors. Interviews and observations were conducted to enrich the quantitative data and gather more detailed information on experiences.

This study demonstrated that having the respect of male peers was significantly correlated with numerous other variables, yet survey participants moderately reported being underestimated by their male peers, and it was a recurring theme in the interviews. Self-efficacy items were strongly inter-correlated, and participants ranked reliable, independent, and imaginative as their top three strongest personality traits. Participants' attitudes toward jazz improvisation were strongly shaped by worry about embarrassing themselves and the interference of nerves. Results demonstrated a majority of participants did not enjoy the competitive aspect of improvisation, and that improvisation anxiety negatively factors into their performance. The interviews described the degree and nature of sexual harassment and discrimination that have been part of the female jazz instrumentalist's experience.
