Music educator attrition in PreK-12 schools "is a consequential and disconcerting phenomenon" (Hancock, 2009, p. 92). "Eleven thousand music educators leave the workforce each year due to either retirement or burnout" (Lindeman, 2004, p. 66). The U. S. Office of Postsecondary Education (2014) reported that 12 states and 2 U. S. territories predicted a shortage of music educators for the 2014-2015 academic year. Using a qualitative lens, I examined the influences that former and current music educators identify as reasons for leaving the music educator profession.

I conducted multiple audio-recorded individual interviews with the four participants, facilitated an audio-recorded focus group interview, and administered an open-ended exit survey. After transcribing the interviews and the focus group, I used "eclectic coding" (Saldana, 2013, p. 188) to code the transcripts. I used the same coding method to code the open-ended surveys. After coding each document, I organized the codes in my codebook by using "categorizing strategies" (Maxwell, 2013, p. 106). Once I grouped all of the codes into their appropriate categories, I used Maxwell's categorizing strategies again to identify overarching themes.

I identified three overarching themes within the data. Theme 1 represents how and when the participants decided to become music educators or musicians and the music education majors' experiences during their pre-service programs. Theme 2 captures the influences that participants struggled with while teaching. Theme 3 characterizes reasons individual participants left the music education profession.
