The U.S. Census Bureau (2010) reported that, between 2000 and 2030, the U.S. population 65 years of age and older will double from 35 million to 71.5 million. An important characteristic of the baby boomer cohort is its size, as this group comprises nearly one quarter of the entire U.S. population. Traditional treatment surrounding the many changes that occur when one ages has focused on using medications, which can come with side affects and become quite expensive. In order to increase the quality of life of each older adult living in the U.S., finding alternative ways to treat biological, psychological, and social issues will become increasingly important as this population grows. Aging is often accompanied with loss, whether friendships, functioning, cognitive capacity, or death. A barrier with regard to increasing quality of life and connection among senior-adult populations is a lack of understanding surrounding the importance of touch. Additionally, no researchers have sought to use a qualitative approach to further understand the importance of touch. It was hypothesized that older adults living within independent living facilities will share their experiences of touch within the facility and this will further inform the research surrounding touch as an intervention leading to improving older adults' quality of life. The results of the study further demonstrated that touch and socialization were important among the older adult population. Older adults expressed that they would receive touch most commonly in the form of a hug and during social engagement with others. Older adults attributed increased quality of life as a result of social interaction to staff and residents, alongside having opportunities to receive and provide touch.
