Although the incidence of ADRD (Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia) is rapidly increasing, ministries related to PWD (People with Dementia) are not. Ministries are, in fact, underdeveloped -- thought to be unproductive, if not impossible to the cognitively impaired.

This qualitative research affirms personhood -- the biblical view that everyone is created in the image of God. Each individual has worth and dignity throughout her or his life, regardless of disability, impairment, or state of mind. Rather than a focus upon the pathology (what is lost or compromised), the focus is on the person (what abilities, strengths, and faith remain). This perspective finds value and importance in what can yet be accomplished, not upon what no longer can be done.

Ministers seek to establish a meaningful spiritual connection with the Christian with dementia by utilizing scripture, prayer, targeted communication, relational skills, and the assistance of the Holy Spirit. The ultimate purpose is to enhance spiritual wholeness and well-being.

Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used by a hospice chaplain while regularly ministering to PWD. Data was obtained from formal clinical visits, church ministry visits, a literature search, published accounts by PWD and their caregivers, and a half-dozen clergy people with dementia. The data was recorded in the form of clinical notes, individual narratives, anecdotal accounts, verbatims, informal interviews, and quotes.

Various themes have emerged. In varying degrees, PWD have sentience, a remnant faith, and moments of lucidity ("sunbreaks") and can establish meaningful connections, communicate, and understand. They want to, and many do, communicate, socialize, stay involved, retain and practice their faith, and make their own choices and decisions. PWD can experience meaningful ministry and spiritual well-being. The biggest hindrance is not their disability, but our inability to understand, appreciate, learn, and compensate by changing our ministerial and communication approaches. Simple and effective ministry to PWD is possible by using the PSALMS Model (PSalms Alzheimer's Ministry Strategy) of pastoral care.
