Background Angola has one of the worst Maternal Mortality Rates (MMR) in the world. Skilled birth attendance (SBA), births attended by a physician, certified midwife, or specially trained nurse, can lead to decreased MMR yet more than half of Angola women give birth at home.

520 $a Background Angola has one of the worst Maternal Mortality Rates (MMR) in the world. Skilled birth attendance (SBA), births attended by a physician, certified midwife, or specially trained nurse, can lead to decreased MMR yet more than half of Angola women give birth at home.
520 $a Purpose To elicit the experiences and perceptions of women in Angola who have chosen to give birth at home rather than utilizing SBA.
520 $a Methods Data was collected by a series of semi-structured interviews with 12 women in Lobito, Angola who have given birth at home at least once. Interviews were conducted in Portuguese, recorded, and the recording were concurrently translated and transcribed by the principal investigator. Transcriptions were reviewed and findings summarized.
520 $a Results Similar responses included: 1) belief that birth is natural, not something requiring medical attention; 2) use of hospitals as a back-up when complications arise; 3) concerns about perceived quality of care and respect from staff at the birthing units; 4) economic challenges and 5) logistic challenges.
520 $a Implications It is imperative to address barriers to SBA as perceived by the women themselves. The government can ensure that women have the right to free health care by removing logistical barriers and enforcing bans on unauthorized user fees. Providers can build relationships within the community, provide education, and promote the need for SBA.
