Chapter 1 is an introduction to the genre and a background survey of the six texts selected for study. Chapter 2 reviews the implications of writing by women and examines how women writers of the literary tanci proclaimed their rights to authorship in their texts. Chapter 3 considers the women's act of reading, how texts related to women, and how reading was viewed by public opinion. Chapter 4 and 5 are textual analyses, with emphasis on domestic and adventure subject matter, respectively. It is pointed out that women writers first set their eyes on domesticity, but that their imagination extended to open spaces, domesticating them and challenging men's conception of them. The final chapter discusses the style of literary tanci. It concludes that the major stylistic characteristic of literary tanci--the irrelevant detail, which has been criticized as a fatal aesthetic flaw, can be read as a metaphor for the female condition that indirectly challenges the dominant literary norms and standards.

There is a short conclusion appended to Chapter Six, which restates my major arguments and suggests possible topics for future study.
