The use of highly skilled teams is becoming a common practice in organizations. Teams promote knowledge-sharing and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of organizations. The study examined the effectiveness of selected elements of structural capital that facilitate nursing team clinical performance in a hospital setting. Structural capital is part of an organization's intangible assets and includes infrastructures, culture, and procedures that motivate employees to work within the confines of an organization. Using secondary data from the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) Nurses Survey and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Hospital Survey, leadership, collaboration, functional diversity, trust, empowerment, and goals were the elements of structural capital examined in this quantitative study. Nursing team clinical performance was evaluated utilizing outcome-based nurse-sensitive quality indicators as developed by the National Quality Forum (NQF) and the American Nursing Association's (ANA) National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI). The study verified the effectiveness of these selected elements of structural capital that facilitate highly skilled teams' clinical performance.

The study determined there was a correlation between the individual element of empowerment and team clinical performance. The study also examined the interactions between the selected elements of structural capital. Path Analysis, a form of Structured Equation Modeling, was performed on the independent variables, and it demonstrated many moderate to strong linear relationships between the different selected individual elements of structural capital. With those relationships evident, a model of the interactions of the selected individual elements of structural capital was developed. The model provided insight into how those selected elements of structural capital work as a system. The model demonstrated a mutually supported, complex system that facilitates the improvement of clinical performance. This study is important because a specific relationship between empowerment and clinical performance was found. In addition, indirect and direct relationships were revealed between the selected elements of structural capital that foster a systems view of nursing team performance. The findings encourage management to view teams from a systems thinking perspective.
