In this study of piano teaching in China, the author reviews the history and influence of western music and piano in China, the method and educational system of piano teaching as well as the aspects of changes and development in China in the twentieth century. Beginning with the century, along with the development of new culture and new music in China, the piano became involved in earnest in the musical life in China and gradually assumed an important position in social and musical activities as well as professional music education. It includes the adoption of the European musical education system and piano teaching method (the National Music Institute in Shanghai) in the 1920s and 1930s; the influence of Russia piano school (the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing) and the development of piano teaching in the 1950s and 1960s; piano teaching during the Cultural Revolution; the new development of piano teaching since 1980, which includes the beginning of piano pedagogy study; the study of aesthetic ideas in piano teaching; the rise of piano craze and the popular piano education in China. The thesis also provides the information of Chinese piano repertoire, its background and the characteristics in different periods of time. This study of piano teaching in China presents a clear understanding of its ideas, approaches and educational system and, above all, the influence of western music in China in the field of piano teaching and studying.
