The purpose of this study was to compare the social studies goals of the Eight-Year Study (1932-1941) of the Progressive Education Association with the goals of the New Social Studies movement of the 1960's. The study identified and described the social studies programs developed by the schools which participated in the Eight-Year Study and identified the goals of these programs. The goals of the New Social Studies were identified and compared to those from the Eight-Year Study, and similarities and differences in the two sets of goals were described.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The study found that the Eight-Year Study and the New Social Studies were different in more ways than they were alike. Both movements stressed critical thinking or inquiry, and values education, but differed greatly in the ways values were used in the curriculum, and in the relative merits of interdisciplinary courses as opposed to structures of a single discipline. The two movements differed greatly in their basic approach to curriculum revision. The Eight-Year Study developed an internal approach to curriculum revision while the New Social Studies movement utilized an external approach. The movements were found to be two very distinct and separate movements which shared some goals while others varied greatly and were often diametrically opposed. Neither movement resulted in substantial or long-lasting changes in the social studies curriculum.
