The study traces the origins of the Life Adjustment Education (LAE) movement, focusing on the response of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), one of the largest urban school systems, to national and state patterns of the Life Adjustment movement between 1945 and 1955.

Chapter 1 reviews the historical and philosophical context of the LAE movement. Chapter 2 discusses the development of the Prosser Resolution, its role in stating the goals of LAE, and its use by LAE proponents as LAE part of the national education agenda. Chapter 3 examines the functions and recommendations of the national Commissions on Life Adjustment Education for Youth.

On the other hand, Chapter 4 shifts the focus to Chicago, reviewing the pioneering work of CPS administrators Albert G. Lane, Edwin G. Cooley, and Ella Flagg Young, in introducing the progressive educational ideas of Dewey and others to Chicago's schools.

Chapter 5 discusses the impact of postwar concerns on CPS and traces the rise of LAE in Chicago under Superintendent Hunt. Chapter 6 reviews the tenure of Benjamin C. Willis as Chicago's General Superintendent of School and how he was influenced by the LAE philosophy. In addition, Chapter 7 traces the demise of LAE, showing that by 1955 the phrase "Life Adjustment Education" in the public mind had become for some synonymous with whatever was wrong philosophically with secondary public schooling.

Chapter 8 closes the study with a summary of findings and compares the educational philosophy and practices of LAE with that of contemporary reformers, such as Gery Chico and Paul Vallas, in CPS. Finally, a conclusion for the study was presented.
