This project attempts to fill a previously unrecognized "gap" in the scholarship on American architect Frank Lloyd Wright: though Wright completed both domestic and corporate designs over the course of his long and celebrated career, these have been treated as entirely separate endeavors. This study will correct this oversight through a critical analysis of Wright's S.C. Johnson headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin, considered in relation to his contemporaneous ideas on architecture's role in domestic life.

Wright's designs for the Johnson Administration Building (1936-1939) and Research Tower (1944-1950) offer a unique opportunity to explore the possible overlaps of the public and private sphere in the context of a company whose carefully crafted image depends on a distinct, intentional connection to domesticity. There is a vast literature on gendered space and domesticity that will also be brought to bear on this corporate commission, which will in turn allow us to consider Wright's life and work in a new light.
