This study was conducted to ascertain how first through fifth grade teachers implement brain-based learning strategies in the traditional classroom. By conducting interviews and reviewing lesson plans and metacognition journals, the researcher was able to uncover how teachers describe their implementation of brain-based learning strategies in the traditional classroom, how teachers use their experiences to decide which strategies to implement, what perceptions, attitudes, or concerns teachers have regarding brain-based learning, and how teachers make decisions regarding which strategy to implement in the traditional classroom. The participants in this study consisted of 10 teachers in first through fifth grades who teach in a school district in western Georgia. Each teacher was trained in brain-based learning through system provided professional development. The findings of this basic qualitative study revealed a variety of brain-based learning strategies utilized by educators to include a positive learning environment and instructional strategies. To decide which strategies to utilize, teachers use experiences that incorporate what they have seen in the past in their classrooms, as well as their own experiences as students. Teachers have a range of perceptions, attitudes, and concerns regarding brain-based learning. Various factors influence teachers when deciding which strategies to implement. Recommendations for continuing this study include conducting the research on additional school systems that offered system wide professional development on brain-based learning and examining how secondary teachers implement brain-based learning strategies in the classroom.
