The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of conductor score type and ensemble performance level on college musicians' perceptions of a wind band performance. Participants (N = 180) were college musicians who were enrolled in undergraduate music methods courses at eight colleges and universities. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conductor score conditions (full score, condensed score, or no score) and one of two performance levels (high school ensemble or professional ensemble), resulting in a 3 x 2 factorial design.

All participants listened to a recorded performance of Yorkshire Ballad by James Barnes, and they evaluated the performance with written comments and ratings. Each written comment was coded by type of feedback (approval or disapproval) and by type of performance category (accuracy, articulation, balance, blend, dynamics, intonation, musicianship, phrasing, tempo, and tone quality). All variables were defined a priori by the investigator based on prior research, and a trained reliability observer coded a random selection of the comments. Interobserver reliability was calculated as a percentage of agreement and was found to be high-100% for feedback type and 91% for performance category. In addition, the ensemble performance rating scale demonstrated high internal consistency.

Significant main effects and interaction effects were found in response to the primary research questions. Compared to those who evaluated the professional ensemble, participants who evaluated the high school ensemble (a) wrote significantly more evaluation comments, (b) wrote significantly more disapproval comments and fewer approval comments, (c) wrote comments related to ten performance categories with significantly different frequencies, (d) provided significantly lower ratings to ten performance categories, and (e) rated the overall ensemble performance significantly lower in terms of a summative rating. Two secondary research questions were investigated as well. Results indicated that participants' division ratings demonstrated considerable variability, and these overall performance ratings differed significantly as a function of ensemble performance level. Additionally, results from secondary data analyses indicated that participants' ensemble performance ratings were influenced by liking for the musical stimulus. Implications for ensemble directors, ensemble adjudicators, and music teacher educators are discussed, and suggestions for further research are provided.
