Proposition 227 mandates that California schools academically instruct children in an English only environment. In spite of this, some parents choose to place their children into bilingual programs. While there is some research on parental reasons for doing so (e.g., Lindholm-Leary, 2001; Whiting & Feinauer, 2011), there is little research focusing on the differences between parental motives depending on the dominant home language. Therefore, this research study investigated parental motives for opting out of an English only environment and enrolling their children into a dual language program where they receive academic instruction in both Spanish and English. The findings were compared amongst English dominant, Spanish dominant, and bilingual homes. This study also identified parental satisfaction with their child's dual language education in academic and social areas. Research identified common motives from all three groups; all parents wanted their child to be able to read, write, and speak two languages.
