Child sexual abuse (CSA) is an emergent problem with traumatic results. Left untreated, this type of abuse places countless children at risk for developing psychological and behavioral difficulties in adulthood. Different cultural beliefs and family values influence the success of therapeutic outcomes for victims of CSA. Treatment can help victims recover from traumatic experience by learning coping strategies to lessen symptoms related to CSA. Research regarding the value of treatment for child victims is limited, as most research explores adults' memories of CSA. The purpose of this research was to explore and understand the factors that influence treatment success for victims of CSA. A purposeful sample of 12 participants licensed as clinicians treating CSA victims was utilized for this study. A qualitative phenomenological approach was utilized to answer the research questions: (a) How do experienced clinical professionals working with CSA victims understand and treat children who are survivors of sexual abuse? (b) What do experienced clinical professionals working with victims of child sexual abuse perceive as supportive factors needed for positive treatment outcomes? and (c) What do experienced clinical professionals describe as successful treatment outcomes for children who have been sexually abused? Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were completed with 12 licensed clinicians to gain an understanding of the problems that influence treatment for these victims. The results of this study will add to current literature to help practitioners to understand the problems that influence treatment success for child victims of sexual abuse.
