The Azusa Street Revival and its ensuing movement were received with both excitement and trepidation among churches of the day. The supernatural experiences were seen as demonic manifestations or runaway emotionalism by some and empowerment from God by others. The divisive issue drove a wedge between previous allies in the holiness movement that is still bearing negative consequences today. This paper will argue that a fear of the unfamiliar experience of "speaking in tongues" generated harmful conflict within the holiness movement, particularly the Church of the Nazarene. This "line in the sand" mentality, along with unhealthy spiritual sibling rivalry must give way to respectful and receptive attitudes that enable partnership, not partisanship in the mission of sharing the holiness message in the world. This is our privileged calling to embrace.
