Stress in psychotherapists has been studied from multiple perspectives, but more research is needed on the effect that work factors have upon perceived stress of therapists. The current study is an ex post facto descriptive study that examined how caseload size, client contact hours performed per week, experience level, and employment status (employee or independent contractor) affect perceived stress level of mental health therapists. Participants in the current study (n = 100) were psychotherapists from one counseling agency in Arkansas. Perceived stress was measured utilizing the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen & Williamson, 1988). Results suggested that confounding variables have been responsible for previous research suggesting these factors impact psychotherapist's perceived stress. Implications are considered for theory, practice, and future research.
