Crying is an infant's way of communicating his needs to his mother. Frequent and intense bouts of crying can be stressful and aversive for some mothers. This study used an experimental paradigm to explore the impact of infant crying on mothers' mood. In addition, this study explored whether factors such as caregiving helplessness, attachment life events, parenting stress, and perceived availability of mothers' attachment figure would contribute to an increase in their negative affect after exposure to an infant's cry. The use of a life-like crying doll allowed the researcher to control the amount of crying experienced by the mothers. Mothers were randomly placed in either the experimental condition (doll crying) or the control condition (no cry) for ten minutes. Participants were 18 mothers (mean age = 37.28 years, SD = 4.7) with children ages 3-36 months (mean age = 15 months, SD = 8.4). Mothers in the experimental condition reported a significant increase in negative affect and a minor decrease in positive affect after exposure to infant crying. Caregiving helplessness, attachment life events, and parenting stress were not associated with mothers' increase in negative affect. Results demonstrated an association between perceived attachment figure availability and increased negative affect. Mothers that reported an increase in negative affect also reported higher perceived availability of their attachment figure. In addition, results indicated an association between caregiving helplessness and positive affect.
