This study examined the employment status of Canadian youth and how Canadian government and Canadian organized labor have historically confronted the troublingly high unemployment rate amongst those 15-24. It was noted that, despite the fact that unions have seemed to be as ineffective as government when it comes to reducing youth unemployment (and far less congenial towards youth in general), young Canadians have had optimistic views of unions that could be exploited. Finally, the paper suggested that, while there are myriad ways in which governments and unions could have improved the situation for under-employed youth in the past, the biggest two recommendations going forward are more operational focus on the part of government and an organized labor movement that values students, sees them as the future, and is prepared to work with others so that this potential future source of union members and supporters is well-served.
