Museum education is one of the cornerstones of any museum's mission, providing information to the general public since their inception in the Untied States in the 19th century. While the field of museum education has developed greatly, there is still a large group of patrons that are under-programmed, specifically middle school aged children. Through a study of museum education coupled with the development of middle school children, this thesis looks at the mentality of the middle school child and their place in the museum. This thesis looks at the connection between education in the classroom and the museum and the benefits of art education. Interviews were conducted with four major museums; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Barnes Foundation, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
