By creating and analyzing art, grieving individuals can uncover hidden emotions and gain a deeper understanding of themselves. In the process of creating a tangible piece of artwork, the grieving person is able to connect to the grief in a way that talking alone may not achieve. The created art becomes a concrete entity that allows the grieving person to see his or her grief more clearly. A clearer perspective allows healing to occur. This inquiry examines the question: What is the experience of grief as expressed through art and writing by a mother after the loss of her child? The literature review examines the topics of grief, art therapy, and the art of German Expressionist, Kathe Kollwitz. A heuristic inquiry of my personal grief is also presented, including my art and writing.
