I aimed to explore how group creativity worked within one case of the theatrical devising process. My goal was to experience, discover, document, and share how our small group, as devising artists, engaged in collaborative efforts to create and perform an original piece of theatre. Utilizing the concept of crystallization, I designed and carried out an arts-based case study of our devising process. As an artist-researcher, I collaboratively devised a new play with four other student artists in the University of Idaho's theatre department. The products of this study took multiple forms: a play script, both a live and filmed version of the play performance, and a written account of my data analysis.

I discovered that our group utilized ten creative approaches throughout our devising process and encountered various collaborative dynamics that shaped and influenced our experience. Our process closely followed Csikszentmihalyi' system's model of creativity (1988, 1999) in a closed, small-group system. Ultimately, since our group had created a product through the this model we didn't use outside feedback to determine the creativity of our final product. Our product was creative because we, as a suitably knowledgeable social group, agreed it was creative. Though the findings of this study are unique to this specific case of devising, the implications of this study may be useful to artists, educators, and researchers who wish to further understand what place devised theatre and group creativity may have in the realm of education.
