This thesis provides an overview of the role that volunteer translators and interpreters play in the translation profession and the ethics they observe. Focusing on situations of conflict, immigration and refugee settlement, and online volunteering for humanitarian causes, the thesis looks at organizations recruiting volunteer translators and interpreters and identifies the motivations, qualifications and challenges of the volunteers. Differences between volunteer and paid positions are noted. In addition to newspaper articles, academic sources and dialogue with experts, information was gathered from three surveys distributed to volunteer translators and interpreters, organizations recruiting volunteers and associations developing standards and ethics. Although a number of grey areas have been identified, the fact remains that, because of the fundamental need to communicate, properly trained volunteer translators and interpreters are increasingly needed in a globalized technological world. Overall, this thesis sets the foundation for more targeted research on the role of volunteers in translation.
