Child homicide is a highly volatile issue, and most research agrees that certain socioeconomic and racial factors render some children more at risk of being murdered or killed. Analyses were conducted on archival data from child homicides committed over a 10-year period, in a rural county in the Western United States, Fresno County, in order to determine whether any risk and protective factors might be identified. A total of 185 cases filed as police reports were analyzed over a period of ten years. The Police report protocol used by the county was very comprehensive and reflected questions pertinent to many major risk and protective factors. Particular interest was paid to those factors that had been consistently noted in the international literature on child homicides, which included child factors (e.g., age of child), parental factors (age of mother), and crime factors (e.g., location of death; cause of death). Particular attention was also given to risk factors regarding social environment (e.g., history of substance abuse in parent, history of child abuse charges), and early child factors (e.g., low birth weight, illnesses). Analyses of frequency data showed that certain trends regarding risk factors were present, in particular, age of child; racial membership; age of mother; cause of death; and geographic location. Most striking, however, was the fact that majority of protocols were incomplete and failed to have any information documented on many of the report protocol questions. Protocols would have provided useful information on many risk factors, but officers in charge had not documented information in their reports. The pervasive lack of consistency and completeness in documentation led researchers to make recommendations about training first responders. Theoretical argument lead one to conclude the age of the child, socioeconomic class, and race of child must be considered when implementing and devising interventions. Other cost-effective, early interventions were suggested, based on birth weight and mother's age.
