The popularity of smart phones, tablets, and other handheld portable devices has motivated the service providers to support not only ubiquitous but also high quality services to their users. Emerging as a promising technology, cooperation helps to increase the end-to-end link reliability. Recently, the research on cooperation has been extended to the virtual MIMO scenario, which also achieves MIMO capacity in a network consisting of single antenna nodes, but suffers from performance degradation due to its signaling cost and inability to track nodes in a mobile environment. The introduction of randomized signal processing on relays addresses this problem later.

Performance of the cell-edge user is always the service provider's concern. Using a transmission scheme called Randomized Distributed Spatial Multiplexing (R-DSM), the transmission rate between the relays and the destination is boosted to a level that is several times higher than the rate that can be achieved through a single relay. As a result, the end-to-end data rate between a source and a destination can be greatly improved. R-DSM explores the spatial multiplexing gain in a relay-assisted distributed wireless network, and adds capacity to the cell edge user. We evaluate R-DSM's performance using the proposed rate adaptation algorithm in fully distributed wireless scenarios.

Relays have been restricted to work in half-duplex mode given the limitations of radio transceivers. Recent progress on self-interference cancellation technology in a full-duplex system makes self-interference no longer an obstacle that restricts the system. Assuming both relays and AP have full-duplex capability, we focus on to what extent a wireless relaying network can benefit from full-duplex technology. We first evaluate a common full-duplex relaying scheme for IEEE 802.11 networks, where each source picks its optimum relay. Then we propose a novel relaying strategy, where the downlink and uplink trac can share a common relay/link simultaneously. Using this strategy, we design a hybrid scheduling algorithm that opportunistically switches between direct link, half-duplex and full-duplex relaying. Simulation results show our hybrid scheme can provide up to 80% more throughput than a traditional half-duplex relaying scheme. Our results can be extended to cellular networks. Then we extend the network topology to the multicell scenario, and employ a heuristic greedy algorithm to find the sub-optimal solution to scheduling the downlink and uplink transmission pair on each cell during each time slot. Our results indicate that even though it introduces more intercell interference, full-duplex relaying is still a better choice for the system to gain more capacity as compared to the half-duplex mode.

There is a rich theoretical literature discussing cooperation strategies and their performance evaluation, which are based on mostly simulation. However, theoretical analysis makes idealized assumptions to simplify the problem, and computer simulations fail to capture the real-world wireless environment. Thus, setting up a real testbed to evaluate cooperative schemes is necessary and can help confirm the viability and efficacy of cooperation at the physical layer. We introduce WARP, a software dened radio platform, and implement several cooperation schemes in a real-time wireless environment on this testbed. The implemented schemes include single-relay transmission, multiple-relay based transmission DSTC and R-DSTC. Our implementation validates the physical layer BER performance of these schemes, and is consistent with theoretical analysis.
