The primary purpose of this quantitative study was to identify factors and/or relationships within a small, rural hospital that shaped the safety climate of its workforce. Specifically, the research questions explored were: (a) Is management's commitment to safety significantly related to the safety climate within the organization? (b) Is there a relationship between teamwork climate and the safety climate of the organization? (c) Are working conditions significantly related to safety climate? (d) Is communication within the organization significantly related to safety climate? This study was conducted at a small, rural, public, not-for-profit hospital in the United States. The Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) served as the data collection tool for this study. A total of 81 hospital employees submitted a survey, with 71 completed surveys received. The study population consisted of 59 females and 12 males, 48 licensed staff, 13 nonlicensed staff, and 10 administrative staff. Participants' years of experience ranged from less than 6 months to over 20 years. Data analysis found a moderate, positive relationship between the perception of management's commitment to safety and that of safety climate within the organization. Further analysis found a moderately strong, positive relationship between teamwork and the safety climate within the organization. Lastly, moderate, positive relationships were found between working conditions and safety climate, as well as between communication with in the organization and safety climate. Further implications of the results are discussed.
