Shifts in local and fresh food ideologies in recent years generated the rediscovery of the local farmers' market. However, changes in the function of some farmers' markets allowed the markets to contribute to the development and strengthening of their communities and neighborhood cultures in the form of a "third place." This study examined how two farmers' markets on O'ahu, Hawai'i behaved as third places and supporters of their communities. Participant observation and participant interviews produced a thick description of the two O'ahu farmers' markets. Results revealed evidence of social and community behaviors that established these markets as third places and community developers. Data also uncovered how tourism significantly influenced the performance and culture of one O'ahu farmers' market, increasing local-global tension and aggravating perceived displacement and powerlessness of local Hawai'i residents when a valued third place was lost.
