This thesis is a contemporary-historical examination of Jamaica's public education system in light of the austerity measures taken in social spending between 1977 and 2013, which stem from International Monetary Fund (IMF) structural adjustment conditionalities. The purpose of this study was to identify how the IMF policy framework has reduced education spending in Jamaica and the subsequent effects of this economic development prescription on the quality of public primary and secondary education. A qualitative methodological approach was used to ascertain official data through semi-structured interviews in Kingston, Jamaica. I also conducted an extensive review of postcolonial theoretical and world-systems analysis literatures to facilitate the interpretation of my findings, which are in support of my principle postulation: fiscal austerity has affected primary and secondary education Jamaica.
