The current workforce spans 4 generations. As 76 million Baby Boomers enter retirement, organizations are beginning to feel the impact of their departure, specifically the disappearance of intangible tacit knowledge that often forms the basis of organizational culture as well as procedural knowledge that keeps the organization running. Similarly, the arrival of 46 million millennial workers to replace retiring Baby Boomers has shifted organizations dramatically. The average cost of recruiting, orientating, and training younger workers (i.e., millennials) is steadily increasing for organizations. The challenge of effective knowledge transfer across generational and organizational boundaries is increasingly becoming a burden to organizations. As attributes of both andragogy and pedagogy are present in the workplace learning environment, this qualitative case study examined what instructional methodologies and techniques based on andragogical and pedagogical teaching paradigms are optimal in enhancing organizational learning and the transfer of procedural knowledge from older generations to millennials.
