This study evaluated the effectiveness of a community-inspired, in-school academic intervention program at a high school in a low socioeconomic community. Guided by the foundations of professional learning communities, the research questions focused on the program's impact on student academic achievement in core academic areas and on student graduation rates during the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years. An exploratory, mixed methods evaluation was used to gather archival student grade data for 753 students, 31 teacher surveys, and 12 teacher interviews. The results of t test grade analyses indicated no significant changes in student course grades for those students participating in the program during the 2010-2011 school year (t (3173) = -1.181, p = .238); however, for 2011-2012, there was a significant increase in second semester grades (t (3417) = -4.209, p < .001). Thematic analyses of qualitative data indicated a need for changes to the intervention assignment process and the need for clarification and standardization in the implementation of all aspects of the intervention program. The evaluation results may impact social change for this low socioeconomic community by helping administrators to improve the academic intervention program and, thereby, creating an environment for students to be productive, contributing members of their community.
