Thesis (Ph.D.)--Gonzaga University, 2013.
This study examined the relationships among foresight, vision, and narrative leadership and described how mental construction of vision is achieved through foresight and how behavioral construction of vision is achieved through narrative leadership. Ethnographic content analysis (ECA) was applied to the text of 17 lectures by Nobel Peace Prize laureates who won the prize for their human rights leadership. Through document analysis, the study asked, "What does this text convey to the reader about foresight, vision, and narrative leadership?" The findings identified vision types, cross-lecture themes, and the role of time orientation in visions of the future. In terms of foresight, the study found that intellection and imagination were clearly identifiable in the lectures and that insight was present but not used as extensively. In terms of narrative leadership, the study discovered how audiences were addressed and how allies and opponents were narrated; the study also identified the presence of a leadership attribution chain. The study pointed to the need for further research about the nature of attribution, how attribution sequences function and the role of insight in leader foresight.
