Effective communication between the doctor and patient is a central clinical function that cannot be delegated (Simpson, 1991). The physician's interpersonal skills can largely determine the patients' overall satisfaction, and compliance (Simpson, 1991). In this study, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and National Cancer Institutes' (NCI) recommendations on effective patientcentered communication in cancer care were used to analyze the perceptions of a small sample of cancer patients' about their communication with their physicians at an urban NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using a convenience sample and questions were asked of the participants, using the IOM and NCI framework as a guide. Patient perceptions were recorded and transcribed for analysis and themes were identified. Many of the patient-centered quality communication indicators were perceived by the participants as being present in their interactions with physicians at the urban Comprehensive Cancer Center.
