Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2014.
Body image disturbances and eating pathology are common among females in Western societies (APA, 2000; Fairborn & Brownell, 2002). There are various consequences of negative body image, including increased rates of mood disorders and eating disorders (Stokes & Frederick-Recascino, 2003). Familial factors that are thought to influence eating pathology include criticism from parents, modeling of unhealthy eating attitudes and behaviors, and parenting style (Cash & Pruzinsky, 2002; Fairburn & Brownell, 2002). Previous research suggests a connection between eating pathology, parenting style and self-regulation; however, no study has examined these three constructs together. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap in current research and further the understanding of how parental factors, such as parenting style, influence the development of eating pathology in young adults---and to determine if self-regulation mediates the relationship between parenting style and eating pathology.
