Low student retention and persistence rates are a concern for leaders in higher education, especially private colleges, dependent upon tuition. College leaders need insight into whether programs designed to increase retention are effective. Explored in this qualitative case study were the perceptions about the effectiveness of the Self-Success Plan at Villa Maria College in Buffalo New York as a strategy that contributed to student success and persistence to the second year. The research consisted of open-ended interviews with seven students, five faculty, and five service directors. Through thematic analysis, five themes emerged from the students' responses (a) self-efficacy, (b) knowing personal strengths and challenges, (c) the value of planning and goal setting, (d) connecting with and using services, and (d) prefer personable assistance. Five faculty and five service directors triangulated the data and three themes that emerged were (a) students should demonstrate good academic skills and ability, (b) Self-Success Plan is a useful tool for planning and goal setting, and (c) follow-up with students is important. While self-efficacy played an important role in student success, consensus among students was the importance of gaining awareness of how services could benefit individual needs and the importance of planning and setting goals to persist to graduation.
