In Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar's feminist classic The Madwoman in the Attic, the authors argue that the madness of Bertha Mason, the infamous madwoman of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, is an expression of rage against patriarchal oppression. Their assertion is problematic, however, because it treats mental illness as a disease instead of a device. In this project, I analyze Bertha's mental illness in Jane Eyre as an illness, unpacking the sociomedical discourse which both created and reinforced the cultural perception of the madwoman figure. Bertha, in this case, has no voice of her own. This, I argue, is the problem---the mistreatment---of female mental illness. The solution to this problem lies in Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys's response to Bronte's depiction of the mad Creole woman in the attic. In unpacking the Caribbean discourse surrounding mental illness, we see that, if given the chance, the madwoman can and will speak.
